THE WAR OFFICE
We give on this page an engraving representing the Secretarys room
of the War Department at Washington exactly as it appeared on the day of the memorable
transfer of the office to Secretary Stanton by General Grant at the bidding of the United
States Senate. The sketch was made by our artist, Theodore R. Davis, on the day that the
transfer took place, and General Grant and Mr. Stanton are represented in the engraving as
they appeared at that time. This apartment of the War Department is known as the
"Secretarys Room," and is the one used by Mr. Stanton and General Grant.
Mr. Stanton ordinarily receives his visitors standing at the corner of the high table in
the right of the picture. General Grant, while acting as Secretary of War, usually did his
work and conferred with visitors seated at the table near which the great chair is placed.
