Commentary: President Johnson re-nominated Henry Stanbery to be Attorney
General. Stanbery had been Attorney General before he resigned to become part of
Johnsons defense team. The Senate refused to confirm Stanbery, in part because of
his opinions on the Military Reconstruction Bill. It did confirm William Evarts, who had
played a key role in Johnsons Impeachment defense even though he was a Republican. |
