CONGRESS
The Bill discontinuing the Freedmen’s Bureau in January 1869, passed both Houses on July 14.

William M. Evarts was confirmed Attorney General on July 15.

HarpWeek Commentary:  President Johnson re-nominated Henry Stanbery to be Attorney General. Stanbery had been Attorney General before he resigned to become part of Johnson’s defense team. The Senate refused to confirm Stanbery, in part because of his opinions on the Military Reconstruction Bill. It did confirm William Evarts, who had played a key role in Johnson’s Impeachment defense even though he was a Republican.
