The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson
»Name: James Wilson Grimes

back to Who Was Who

James Grimes was born in Deering, New Hampshire. He became a lawyer and moved to Iowa in 1836. He was the Whig governor of Iowa from 1854 – 1858, and then became a Republican Senator from 1859 -1869. He voted against the impeachment of Andrew Johnson in 1868, probably out of both principle and a strong dislike of Senator Benjamin Wade of Ohio who, as President pro tem of the Senate, would have become President if Johnson had been removed from office. He died in Burlington, Iowa.
